The SAS forms a significant part of the United Kingdom Special Forces. The other parts are: the Special Boat Service (SBS), the Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR),the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG)).
FunctionCurrent SAS roles are believed to include:[2]
- Intelligence collection in the deep battlespace.
- Battlespace preparation by sabotage and offensive raiding in the medium and deep battlespace.
- Counter-terrorism operations inside United Kingdom territory in conjunction with police forces, the most famous of which was the Iranian Embassy Siege after a hostage situation. [3] [4]
- Counter Terrorism operations outside UK territory.
- Training soldiers of other nations, and training guerillas in unconventional warfare.
- Counter Revolutionary Warfare activities in support of UK government Foreign Policy.
- Protection of senior British dignitaries and VIPs.
